Dear Readers,

As 2024 draws to a close, we reflect on the year's significant strides in global biodiversity protection. At the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), a new work program and a permanent body were established within the global biodiversity framework to represent the voices of Indigenous communities and local people. Additionally, new guidelines were set for sharing benefits from digital genetic data, and the ‘Cali Fund’ was created to support biodiversity projects. Further pledges added USD 163 million to the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund.

While these developments are encouraging, the disparities in capacity and resources among countries highlight the ongoing challenge of creating sustainable and inclusive solutions for biodiversity loss. Biodiversity protection must go beyond discussions — it is a shared responsibility that demands equitable and actionable solutions.

In India, we marked a major milestone with the release of the updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for 2024-2030. Among its key priorities is the Gender Action Plan, which emphasises the inclusion of women, particularly from rural and Indigenous communities in decision-making processes at all levels. In this final edition of our newsletter for the year, we explore the NBSAP’s key goals and roadmap. Additionally, in recognition of One Health Day (3 November 2024), we highlight the importance of the One Health framework in veterinary and livestock practices to protect ecosystems and reduce risks related to drug residues.

The 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference further underscored that biodiversity and climate action are intertwined and their challenges require collective, equitable solutions. Let us carry the lessons from this year's global events into 2025, with renewed commitment to safeguarding biodiversity and addressing climate change.

Wishing you an impactful year ahead.

Warmly,
Editors

India’s NBSAP 2030: Leading the Momentum to Integrate Biodiversity into Society and Economy
At the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in 2022 at Kunming and Montreal, countries reached a historic consensus with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), often referred to as the “Paris Agreement for Nature.” The framework's goal is to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. As part of this commitment, nations agreed to submit updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) by COP16 in October 2024.

Neglected Ecological and Human Health Risks of Veterinary Drug Use in Livestock: A Call for One Health
Livestock plays an integral role in traditional farming agroecosystems in India, being essential to the livelihoods of small-scale farmers. It serves as a source of income, fertiliser, and food. While drugs such as antibiotics and antiparasitics are essential to livestock health and welfare, their use must be approached with caution. Alongside their benefits, there is a largely neglected concern: the human health and environmental risks that arise when these drugs are used carelessly.

YouTube Playlist: Voices from the Wetlands
Wetlands are critical for sustaining biodiversity, yet their vast ecosystem services, cultural significance and the reliance of local communities often go under-documented. To bridge this gap, 55 local community members from four Ramsar Sites—Pong Dam and Renuka Ji lake in Himachal Pradesh, Point Calimere in Tamil Nadu and Bhitarkanika in Odisha were trained in videography and video editing, empowering them to tell their own stories. This series features eight videos created by the community members, showcasing the unique relationships they have with wetlands.
